About Us

Our team is always here for your pets

Salisbury Veterinary Surgery was opened in 1983. As the reputation spread about it’s good service and fair pricing, it has evolved into a strong general practice, seeing mainly cats and dogs, with the occasional rat, mouse and guinea pig.

A New Direction

After working for 3 years in the practice, Dr John purchased the Surgery in 1999. In 2005, the Surgery was relocated to 220 Lillian Ave, to provide double the area. These bigger premises enabled separate Dog and Cat hospital wards, a second consult / grooming room, a separate surgical theatre and larger retail floor space.

The Surgery was again relocated in March 2016 to 1/668 Toohey Road, Salisbury, due to its continued strong growth. The new premises are double the size of the previous place. We now have 2 consult rooms, a Nurses room, a Grooming room, 2 surgical theatres, separate waiting areas for Cats and Dogs, a Treatment room, and separate Dog and Cat hospital wards. Most importantly – we have a Staff Room, and a private office (so the Boss can hide).

Originally being a full-time Pharmacist for 8 years, John has broadened the knowledge and resources of the practice. This has provided a deeper understanding of how medication will help your pet. Our Veterinary Surgery provides modern, professional and affordable health care for your pets. We aim to make you and your pet feel at ease in our clinic, with a caring and gentle approach to treatment and consultations.

Our dedicated Nurses and Veterinarians are passionate about all pets and avid animal lovers. At our Veterinary Surgery, you will be fully supported with sound advice first and foremost. We know that helping our clients, starts with providing a good understanding of health care issues, and treatment choices. With good advice and professional recommendations, you will be well equipped to make the best ongoing health care decisions for your pet. With fully equipped examination rooms, diagnostic equipment, in-house blood analysis, digital radiology, blood pressure monitoring, prescription nutrition and pharmacy stores, we provide an on-the-spot assistance for nearly all pet health and medical needs. The current philosophy of the practice is to offer, and provide the best service to our clients and their extended family.

Our efficient nurses are continually informed of the latest treatments and medications available. They are competent groomers, surgical assistants, hospital attendants, as well as receptionists. They always greet our clients in a warm friendly manner.

John Wright About Us

John Wright

Hello, I’m John, and I’m the Boss (when I’m allowed). I was raised on a cattle property near Tamworth NSW, and have always had an interest in animals and medicine. I graduated from Sydney University in 1980 as a Pharmacist, and worked full time for 8 years. The calling for working with animals was too strong to resist, so I left full time Pharmacy, and worked on my father’s cattle property for 3 years. I then started the 5 year full time degree of Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland, at the age of 32. During my studies, my wife Sue, and I, had 2 daughters. After graduation in 1995, I stayed in Brisbane and focused my veterinary skills on small animal medicine and surgery. I started working at Salisbury Vet Surgery in 1995. During this time, another daughter was born. After 3 & ½ years, my boss decided to retire, so I purchased Salisbury Vet.

Continuing education is vital for a successful practice, so I have attended 5 weeklong conferences (Dermatology, Surgery, Senior Care, Feline Medicine & Surgery and Ophthalmology). These conferences have been complemented with the completion of 3 year-long correspondence courses (Feline Medicine, Surgery and Radiology).

My interests are; Surgery – routine, as well as the more complex, including Orthopaedic, Luxating Patella corrections, Cruciate repairs (including the Tightrope method), Dentistry and General Medicine. When not at work, I am a home Handyman, I ride my Road Bike, and occasionally participate in cycling charity events. I also enjoy watching Survivor. I have one wife (Sue), one cat (Luna) and 3 daughters.

I mainly work Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and alternate Saturdays.

Shelley About Us

Hi my name is Shelley, and I’m a member of the Salisbury Vet Nursing Team. I was originally a client of Salisbury Vet for 15 years before I started working here. I have been with the team for over twelve years now and love being able to help care for your very special family members. Animals are my passion, and originally coming from a Financial Industry background, I feel very fortunate to be able to have a career that I love. I have been coming to Salisbury Vet, for longer than John has been working here. I also have a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. The team’s dedication to your pets is second to none, which is why I guess we have lots of clients who travel quite a distance to see us. I have been breeding Cornish Rex Cats now for over 30 years. I am also do Grooming part-time. I enjoy pampering your pet, be they cat or dog with a bath, haircut and bow. We offer a unique service option of Owner to Hold appointments for those pets who are a little nervous, or for the clients who don’t wish to leave their pets for a full day stay. You can still leave your pet all day if you wish.

Jennifer - Veterinary Nurse

Jennifer About Us

My name is Jennifer, I have worked as a Vet Nurse for John for many years. Like Shelley, I was a client of Salisbury Vet many years before I started working here as the “casual” Vet Nurse. I also have been coming to Salisbury Vet, for longer than John has been working here. I have a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. A great amount of my spare time is dedicated to my hobby of breeding & showing my much loved Chihuahua’s. Weekends will find my family & I attending Dog Shows with great success, having been breeding & showing for over 25 years. I am also a qualified Dog Judge which often sees me travelling interstate to officiate. In 2014, I flew to Osaka, Japan, where I was invited to be the Guest Chihuahua Judge, at their annual Competition.

OliviaTrainee Veterinary Nurse
My name is Olivia. Like Aimee, I have been working at Salisbury Vet for over a year now and I am also working my way through the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing. I started doing voluntary work to accumulate my hours so I am able to complete my Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing Certificate. When a position became available, I was then asked to work for them. I like all aspects of working as a vet nurse.
Aimee – Trainee Veterinary Nurse
